At Camp Thoreau, we believe the ability to feel secure and confident in the water is an absolute necessity for all children. For campers just learning to swim, our highly respected aquatics staff will lead them through fun-based, progressive lessons aimed to help children feel comfortable in a no-pressure environment. Intermediate and advanced swimmers benefit from instructors highly experienced in teaching stroke development and refinement, as well as the ability to offer training tips and advice for campers interested in competitive swimming.
Our Staff:
Each aquatics instructor is Red Cross certified and has experience teaching all levels of swimming. In addition to that certification, staff participate in multiple in-service training sessions throughout the summer to ensure their skills and knowledge are continuously up to date.
Our Facility:
Lessons for our youngest campers take place in our shallow-depth pool, which slopes from 3.5' to just 4' in the deepest section. Those with no prior swim experience are kept in the shallowest section, ensuring that virtually all campers will be able to touch the bottom of the pool throughout their instruction.
For our older and more experienced swimmers, lessons take place in our separate 25 yard pool, partitioned into lanes. This pool includes a diving well with a diving board used to teach safe (and fun!) entry into the water.
